The 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics

The 2020 Summer Olympics were due to take place in Tokyo between the 24th of July and the 9th of August. As a result of the COVID-19 Coronavirus pandemic, the games have been postponed. They will now take place between the 23rd of July and the 8th of August 2021. This is the first time the Olympics have been postponed. Despite the Olympics taking place in 2021, the games will keep the name Tokyo 2020 for marketing and branding purposes. In addition to postponing the games, the COVID-19 Coronavirus has severely hampered the build-up, with qualification events being cancelled and doping tests severely reduced.

Tokyo was named as the Olympic host city during the 125th session of the International Olympic Committee. The session took place in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on the 7th of September 2013. This marked the second time Tokyo would host the Olympic Games, thus making it the only Asian city to host the games twice. This will be the fourth time Japan has hosted the Olympics, with Tokyo hosting in 1964, and Sapporo and Nagano hosting the Winter Olympics in 1972 and 1998 respectively. The 2020 Tokyo Olympics will be the second of three consecutive Olympics to be held in East Asia, with the event sandwiches in between the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang County, South Korea, and the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, China.

There are 6 new permanent events to look out for at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games: Sport Climbing, Surfing, Skateboarding, Karate, Baseball and Softball. In addition, new competitions will include 3x3 Basketball, Freestyle BMX and Madison Cycling. The introduction of so-called 'extreme sports' indicates the growing modernity of the Olympic Games, attempting to win over younger fans. The 2024 Paris Olympic Games Committee have followed suit, recommending break dancing to be part of the 2024 Olympic program.
