The 2022 FIFA World Cup will be the 22nd edition of the elite quadrennial competition. Taking place in Qatar, the 2022 FIFA World Cup will be the first World Cup to be held in an Arab country and the first in a Muslim-majority country. It will also be only the second time the tournament is held in an Asia, the first being the 2002 tournament held in South Korea and Japan. The 2022 FIFA World Cup will be the last World Cup we see the standard 32 team format, with an increase to 48 teams scheduled 2026 tournament.
Taking place in November/December, the 2022 FIFA World Cup will be the first World Cup not to be held in May, June or July. The tournament is scheduled to take place over a shortened 28 day period, with the final set to take place on the 18th December, which is National Qatar Day.
Qatar's hosting of the 2022 FIFA World Cup has come under scrutiny in recent months, with allegations of corruption and criticism over treatment of workers at the forefront of the critique. Despite a FIFA internal investigation clearing Qatar of any corrupt activity, Chief Investigator Michael J. Garcia described the inquiry as 'materially incomplete and erroneous.' Former FIFA President Sepp Blatter went onto suggest Qatar had cheated to win hosting rights.
Furthermore, Qatar have come under scrutiny from Amnesty International for their treatment of foreign workers involved in the preparations for the World Cup, with the organisation stating that hundreds of thousands of workers have died as a result of human rights abuses and sub-par working conditions.
