Where your event sits in that range depends on a handful of factors: the chef's experience and reputation, the complexity of the menu, the number of guests, and any special requirements.

People do hire private chefs for Christmas Day, and it is the most expensive date in the calendar for it. A chef giving up the 25th with their own family charges accordingly, and the good ones are taken by early autumn. That is the day-rate market described above.

It is not the tier we work in, and we would rather say so than take the enquiry. A Michelin-starred or household-name chef will almost never cook on Christmas Day at any price. Their own restaurants are closed and the day belongs to their families. It is one of the few things in this business that money genuinely does not buy.

What is possible is the season around it. Festive dinners, cook-alongs and masterclasses through late November and December are a well established part of what we arrange, and they book out from early autumn for the same reason. Day Rate, Retainer, or an Occasion

Searches for private chef costs usually mix three different needs, and they have very different answers.

• A day-rate booking covers a single event: one evening, one menu, one dinner cooked to a high standard. The figures above apply to this.
• A full-time or retained private chef is a household employment matter, with a salary agreed directly between you and the chef. It sits outside event pricing altogether.
• An occasion is something else again. A milestone birthday, a client dinner that has to land, a gift meant to be remembered for years. Here the chef is not catering the evening, the chef is the reason for it.

• A private chef is a caterer of a high standard. You are buying skilled cooking and service for the evening, priced by the day.
• A Michelin star chef brings a restaurant's discipline into your home: a brigade, sourcing relationships most private cooks cannot reach, and consistency under pressure. You are buying the kitchen behind the name.
• A celebrity chef brings recognition as well as cooking. Your guests know who is standing at the pass, and the evening becomes an occasion in itself rather than a very good dinner.

If the aim is to feed twelve people beautifully on a Tuesday, a private chef is the right call and we are not the right company.
